This Colt Target Pistol 22LR Pre-Woodsman, manufactured in 1922 is an excellent example of what Colt referred to as the “Colt Automatic Target Pistol” and would take the “Woodsman” moniker in 1927. The target pistol wears a 6 5/8” tapered pencil barrel, can carry 10 rounds of .22LR and has adjustable front sight and rear sights.
Finished in Colts brushed blue, it shows strong throughout both sides of the frame and most of the barrel. The back strap shows a thinning finish. The muzzle and leading edges show sharpness with some light silvering. Light freckling can be noted throughout the trigger area and front strap.
The markings on this Pre-Woodsman are as follows: The left side of the slide reads “COLT AUTOMATIC CAL .22 LONG RIFLE” In front of the rampant colt. The top of the barrel reads; “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFOD, CT. U.S.A.” “PAT’D DEC. 22, 1903. AUG. 27, 1918/ SEPT. 3, 1918.” The right side of the pistol does not show any markings. Other markings noted is a “20” at the front of the magazine well and the serial number “23214” on the front strap.
The walnut grips have diamond reliefs set around the grip screw and escutcheon rings. The grips show their age nicely with the checkers showing round, and some smoothing near the top center of the right grip panel.
The magazine finished is blue, has a long floor plate, appears to be stamped “MEXICO” on the top of the toe.
Overall, this would be an excellent addition to any pre-war semi-automatic side arm collection, or those looking to expand a budding woodsman collection.

04/07/2024 5:53:04 PM UTCThe woodsman’s are really great shooters, there are some I believe after 1933 are able to handle high velocity ammunition. This has the checkered oval but due to it being a 1924, I would assume you would still run standard velocity. That is if you were to fire this one.
