The pistols produced during this time were part of multiple direct shipments to State Militias and National Guard Units.  This WWI Colt M1911 Is listed in Charles Clawson’s Book “Colt 45 Service Pistols” on page 381 as being shipped to the Adjutant General, State of Rhode Island, Providence Rhode Island on April 16th, 1914, in a shipment of 300 guns.

WWI Colt M1911 U.S. Army .45 ACP

This WWI U.S. ARMY M1911 is expectational display, shows common wear patterns associated with cycling, and carrying. Most of the wear is noted on the top of the slide. The serif style font roll marks are deep with sharp edges throughout. The frame and slide show the faint directional brush used for surface finish synonymous with the early WW1 “fine brushed blue” M1911. The small parts show a beautiful smokey blue finish, which was limited to the M1911 during this period of production.

The markings on the left side of this World War 1 M1911 show Colts Patent “PATENTED APR. 20, 1897, SEPT. 9, 1902, DEC. 19,1905. FEB. 14, 1911” and the second column “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A”. On the frame right under the patent reads “UNITED STATES PROPERTY”. A non-circled rampant Colt is placed behind the slide serrations. Behind the trigger the inspection mark is circled “WPG” (Walter G. Penfield) who was inspector of ordnance from Jan 2, 1911 to Sept, 30 1914. The Right side of the slide shows “Model of 1911 U.S. ARMY” and the Serial Number on the frame above the trigger “No 69972”

Military Pistol

Other Markings on this military M1911 to note are that of the barrel, which displays a horizontal block font “P” and “H” on the top of the hood. Additionally, an “H” above the firing pin stop plate.  The receiver internally shows the “H” & “R” near the disconnector hole. The Barrel shows clean and very strong rifling, with a deep finish on the outside, also showing common wear patterns.

Colt M1911

The double diamond grips are an excellent display with handling marks that show their life on the high points, while still showing sharp checkering throughout and beautiful deep color. Thinning finish can be seen on the front strap and discoloration can be seen on the mainspring house. The screw heads show tool marks, and silvering. The single included magazine is era correct lanyard loop variant used through 1915 finished two tone, top half in the white, and bottom half in blue.

WWI M1911

Overall, This World War 1 M1911 shows its service well, with strong checkering throughout small parts, strong leading edges despite the wear of carry and service. This would be a perfect addition for collectors looking for an early Military M1911 or that of pivotal WWI pistols in high condition.

The lanyard loop magazine is correct for this pistol. They were used up until approximately 1915
