This Colt Service Model Ace is finished in blue and features the Williams Floating Chamber and adjustable Stevens rear sight. A Semi-automatic pistol chambered in .22 LR, designed slightly different from the standard ACE. The floating chamber aided the recoil response that mimicked the action of the .45 ACP pistols. This military proof marked Colt Ace wears a “WB” acceptance mark. Later production pistols would then switch to a parkerized finish.
The finish throughout is deep blue and retains a bright shine with minimal superficial marks. Two areas of thinning can be noted above the serrations on the top of the slide, and near the muzzle on the right side of the slide. The rest of the pistol shows exceptionally light high edge silvering. The walnut grips are in good condition showing some wear with no major chips or cracking. The bore shows bright and shiny, with strong lands and grooves.
This Service Model ACE has the following markings on the left side of the slide reads Colt’s address “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CP. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” and below that the patent “PATENT NUMBERS ◽2,090,656◽ 2,090,657” The rampant colt sits between the slide serrations and the patent. Below the slide stop is the W.B. inspection mark in set a rectangle. The Triangular “VP” is on the left side trigger guard bow.
The right side of the pistol’s slide reads “COLT SERVICE MODEL” “ACE” in the diamond cartouche and “.22 LONG RIFLE” The serial number sits just forward the grip above the trigger relief and reads “SM 2611”
Dissembled this SM Ace is clean, and shows the slide is a serial number match to the frame, under the firing pin stop. The magazine included is a 10-round capacity, finished two tone, top half in the white, and bottom half in blue. The bottom is marked “COLT” above “22 ACE L.R.” & “SERVICE MODEL”
Overall, this Colt Service Model ACE would be an excellent addition to collections focused on pre-war small arms, or military pistol variants that are harder to come by.
