This Colt Pocket Positive is offered as a nice example of an early civilian double action revolver, that features a six-round cylinder chambered in .32 CTG. The Pocket Positive is a small frame revolver that introduced the advancement of modern passive safety system that prevented accidental discharges if it was dropped. Colt developed the Pocket Positive from the New Pocket revolver; the New Pocket would lend some left-over parts for the first 4 transition years of production. The Pocket Positive would be the predecessor to the Detective Special and the Police Positive. The serial number lookup at Colt.com dates this Pocket Positive revolver as a 1907 production.
This Colt Pocket Positive is finished in blue and wears black hard rubber grips. The finish throughout shows micro-abrasions, alongside a few notable handling marks. Both the trigger and hammer show trace of fire blue. The leading edges are all moderately rounded, with no noticeable high edge wear or silvering. This gun shows signs of being refinished, between the pitting and soft roll marks. Despite the refinish the gun shows its 116 years of age well.
The markings read well; although they have soft edges in some areas. On the left side of frame. A soft “COLT’S NEW POCKET” circled the Rampant Colt, confirming this is an extra parts frame from the New Pocket. The “VP” Proof mark is sharp on the left side bow of the trigger guard. The barrels left side “COLT. D.A. 32” Marking the mandatory use of Colts proprietary .32 Long or .32 Short Colt cartridges, allowing them to avoid stamping the competitions .32 S&W on their guns.
The right side of the barrel reads Pocket Positive, and the top reads Colt’s patent in 3 lines, both sets of markings are legible, but show soft edges. Colt used a straight barrel during the early production years seen on this revolver and switch the tapered version later. The leading edges of the muzzle, and front sight shows no handling marks and straight edges.
The hard rubber pocket positive grips are smooth, with minimal handling marks near the butt. The Colt hallmark at the top of the grips reads clearly on each side and the checkering throughout is sharp. The screw heads show tool marks, and some discoloration. The serial number can be found on the butt of the revolver clearly “35158” the numbers “536” exist on the frame and the crane.
